The Edge of the Map

The Edge of the Map Holes ‘Maps don’t just have outside edges. They have inside edges. Holes’ When our crew of bandit hunters are sent into the Eld, they have at least seen a map of the place. Pat is nothing but precise in all things though, and he has again left us with just enough clues to work out the crew’s movements with some confidence, and the results can be used to construct a map of our own which may help to patch a few holes in the text and also fill in some holes in our Temerant history. The numbering is a bit tricky at times but overall, it does come nicely together. For best results use a sheet of A4 squared paper. The Pennysworth Inn is the beginning and end point of our journey and is going to define two edges of our latest map. This Inn is located at the last major crossroads south of the Eld and this is where our crew first begin their journey proper under the trees. We shall begin all of our Eld-time counting from here and our mileage too, so we should use the crossroa...

Let There Be Light

Let There Be Light L Faelight On the day that the Faelight was turned on and the cthaeh was caught in the shadow of his tree, something else rather important happened. The Sithe were formed to guard him. ‘If any of the fae can be said to work for the good, it’s them. Their oldest and most important charge is to keep the Cthaeh from having any contact with anyone. With Anyone.’ That their oldest and most important charge was given to them on the day that the prison was constructed for occupancy is irrefutable because until the intended prisoner arrived, there would have been no need for any such guards to exist. As to who would have charged them with their new task? well that can only have been on the explicit orders of the creator of the prison tree (and it’s attendant cage of light). The prisons chief warden would only be one they deferred to, one who would have the requisite authority to command this task of members of the powerful fae to join his faction, much like Selitos would be ...

The Oracle

The Oracle The Tree of Knowledge I swear it on my tongue and teeth. I swear it on the doors of stone . I’m telling you three thousand times. There is nothing in my world or yours more dangerous than the Cthaeh.  So… The Cthaeh… Interesting name, and it’s not a small name. It tells to us about itself. ‘Do not try to pin me with small names. I am Cthaeh. I am. I see. I know… At times I speak.’ Whilst we should all agree on that emphatic statement, we do need to ask ourselves the question ‘What exactly does it do?’ Well, it is a seer. It sees the future… all futures apparently, and it can see them all perfectly. Now, Perfectly would imply it is therefore a creature of the shapers, because all things the shapers made were created to be perfect too. The whole of Fae was created to be perfect and every tree, every butterfly, every blade of grass, and every grain of sand was made especially to be there, for ever, doing it’s desired job perfectly. The Cthaeh is a part of the furniture of th...

Track Record

Track Record Day and Night Now that we finally have one foot in the Fae, some form of map may be rather useful before continuing. Half a page or so of hints is not much to go on but it should be enough as life in the Fae is governed by two things, dark and light, and the further out from the centre you go, the darker it gets. To gather the materials for Kvothe’s shaed took an expedition out into the outer limits where strange and dangerous things live. The sky darkened and the stars dwindled but there were still trees in this part of Fae, vast trunks and dark branches like a cathedral towered all around them. One unseen but terrifying presence was attracted by foolish Kvothe when he decided to make some light to see by, stupid boy. Now it may very well have been the light itself that attracted it, that is the most likely explaination, however it should be noted that he didn’t use something as mundane as a tinderbox, oh no, he used sympathy in a motion-to-light binding (Capacatorial Kin...

Bet You A Jot

Bet you a Jot? Aleu. There are four major coins minted by the Cealdim that are now the main units of currency across the cizilized world the Mark, the Talent, the Jot and the Drab. This is a world which Aleph himself once spun out of the nameless void, and he is also one of the four most powerful namers in the land Aleph, Lyra, Iax and Selitos. Now! If we were to award one coin each as the prizes in a ‘who was the most powerful namer of the creation war’ competition then Aleph, who knows the names of all things, would score top marks and thus in our hypothetical competition he would clearly win the Gold Mark. Lyra was another who could equal Selitos power but we are informed that she is dead and so we shall have to disqualify her on those grounds and award her the consolation prize of the Iron Drab. Which leaves only Selitos himself and the mysterious Iax to be accounted for if we are going to determine who deserves the silver talent and who gets the copper jot in the order of such thi...

Tinker Tangle

Tinker Tangle Tinker Tangle I’ve been fretting about this one a bit, because I know I’m a leg short. This is Pie level and Pi is complicated… It is the first step between 3&4. It is where geometry starts to become trigonometry and where Triangels become pyramids, Oh well, onwards and upwards, tinker foil it is then… ‘A tinkers debt is always paid, Once for any simple trade, Twice for freely given aid, Thrice for any insult made. πΠπ There are two tinkers of major note encountered so far, Trebon tinker and Eld tinker. Ignore all the others for now, these two are the important ones we need to focus on today. The Trebon tinker is best considered using hindsight. First up, Kvothe was not looking to buy anything but would soon need to get rid of his horse, just as the tinker really needed to acquire one. This is a trade where the tinker admits that he the is in need of aid most which puts him on the back foot in negotiations. Fortunately for him he just happened to have a small, rare an...
