OutLines

Out Lines Downhill ‘So same can the humble thrush well know it’s north.’ The university campus is where most of our action takes place and so we must move back above ground now to draw a more useful map for new students to navigate by. Pat has already drawn his, and there is a tantalising fragment, deliberately cropped imho, available to see on the blackboard behind him in THIS early publicity photo. However, Pat enjoys a good laugh and the first thing that most folk would assume is that this map has North at the top. But it doesn’t. North is at the bottom! The object of this exercise is to redraw the chalkmap and fill in the important but sadly lacking buildings of Mains, Mews and of the many chimbleyed Alchemists complex which they call the Crucible. This might get messy again at times but it should all come together eventually to form a satisfactory map if we just lay all the little clues out clearly into three piles so as to build up a fully interconn...

Sub-Ordination

Sub-Ordination Sub-Ordination We know there are six upper floors to the archives, but they are actually very boring. Books! Books! Books! Nothing but books. But when Kvothe first takes his candle int othe stacks he discovers that the staircases lead down as well as up, and downstairs are where the real secrets lie. This is going to tie quite a few pieces together as we begin to map everything underthing, a daunting project which needs to be approached carefully. As far as the underarchive goes I have found three useful pieces of information to work a new triangle with, how traditional. Firstly, Puppet’s lair is found on Sub-Three. Secondly, The 4-plate door is located on the floor above Puppet, making it Sub-Two. Furthermore we are told ‘We have 1000 years of court documents from a hundred different cities squirrelled away down in Sub-two, whole rooms full…’ giving us some chronology to go by too. Thirdly, there is a passing mention of some...

Moving Mountains

How Old Archive Came To Be Now, despite all of the comparisons made to one, the Archive is not a solid block of grey stone as a waystone undoubtedly is. Yet nor is it exactly a hollow stone egg either, and so we ought to best think of it as being like a perfectly formed termite mound, in that it is honeycombed with many hidden passages and cavernous chambers, dotted throughout like lots of little pockets. Above ground these windowless walls house six stone floors and therefore six high ceilings which provide storage for thousands of books on miles of bookshelves that line all of it’s countless corridors. It also has hidden reading rooms, assorted offices and diverse departments for all the industrious scrivs and there are also lots of staircases, both up and down, to knit everywhere together in perfect secrecy behind the only ingress of the two massive stone doors. And every single inch of it, every wall and floor and step and door is all made out of same, solid, seamless grey stone. M...

The Eight Squared

As above… So below. BOOK II When I wrote these next pages back in 2020 I had reached a point in my tinfoil where I could nearly count up to eight. 8 Cities, 8 Chandrian, 8 Angels and 8 Amyr… there might even be 8 Sithe, too, but they are not important here…yet. But if we are going to uncover the true shape of the world then we are going to need somewhere to stand. The Archives is one of the cornerstones of civilization which in another world (ours) would be regarded as one of the seven wonders, a dominant feat of engineering to dwarf all others. Sod TinuĂ«, all roads should lead to the Archives and so I think we had better start to begin drawing a few of my strings back together again for tangling together before knotting off at the present day. This is probably going to get a bit messy since I will, in part, be working backwards again, but this is also a real time deconstruction being built right now as I shall attempt to map the insides of the Archive out from top to bottom and ...
