Let There Be Light

Let There Be Light Faelight On the day that the Faelight was turned on and the cthaeh was caught in the shadow of his tree, something else rather important happened. The Sithe were formed to guard him. ‘If any of the fae can be said to work for the good, it’s them. Their oldest and most important charge is to keep the Cthaeh from having any contact with anyone. With Anyone.’ That their oldest and most important charge was given to them on the day that the prison was constructed for occupancy is irrefutable because until the intended prisoner arrived, there would have been no need for any such guards to exist. As to who would have charged them with their new task? well that can only have been on the explicit orders of the creator of the prison tree (and it’s attendant cage of light). The prisons chief warden would only be one they deferred to, one who would have the requisite authority to command this task of members of the powerful fae to join his faction, much like Selitos would be th...

sithe

9 ~ The Sithe This one shouldn’t take long because we know bugger all about them, that’s the theory anyway. Young Kvothe has never heard of them and focuses his search more upon the Amyr. But elder Kote has since learnt that the Sithe are a faction among the Fae. Powerful, with good intentions... but let’s talk to Bast first, he seems to know the most about the the Sithe. ‘You don’t understand them if you use the term ‘good intentions.’ But if any of the Fae can be said to work for the good, it’s them. Their oldest and most important charge is to keep the Cthaeh from contact with anyone. With Anyone.’ But Bast is only 150 years old and doesn’t know everything, this oldest and most important charge was given to them before his time… but by whom? Someone very important no doubt but before we get onto that mystery there is one other Bast mention of them too, and a very important one as well. When he is making his holly crown defence against any future skin dancer attack, he also talks onc...

Dictum span

1 ~ Tangles Dictum ‘Seven. You can hold to that with some certainty. It’s part of their name, actually. Chaen means Seven. Chaen-dian means “Seven of them”.Chandrian. Now Ben is university educated, and that is where he has learned a bit of ancient Temic, a language that predates ‘the old Tema that only priests know’ by a thousand years. But we should also remember that the university is Amyr run, and that they are at least as old as Thelu’s first priests and would also speak the old language of the world. Furthermore, nothing Amyr influenced should be taken at face value in these books, or indeed in their own books, and Dian is not Drian just as Chaen is not Chan. Inconsistancies indicate errors and given that Pat has stated that he poured an awful lot of time and thought into creating names for this language, and since Names Are Important, it is only fair that I do the same in order to decipher it back again, and I would expect things to be error free. The Chaendrian are a group...

old stone road

2 ~ The Old Stone Road The Great Stone Road This road is the elephant in the room. It dominates the map yet is rarely spoken of. It is straight as a nail, flat as a table and older than God. It runs from Imre to the Stormwal mountains, never deviating from it’s course. It doesn’t appear to actually go anywhere, the towns it does get close to were built because of it, not the other way around. It’s builders were even mindless of all the trees in the Eld, perhaps it was there before them. Our Earliest mention of it is in Hespe’s tale The Broken Road. Jax follows it westwards to TinuĂ«, where we are told all roads lead, before travelling onwards into the mountains in search of the moon. At face value this tells us that it was there before the creation war and thus predates Lanre and the Blak of Drossen Tor, which is coincidentally very nearly an anagram. The Free City of TinuĂ« is Not on the road itself, however this can be altered to fit by putting the name to the ancient area of land arou...

33 1/3

33 1/3 The Singers Since everything is getting knotted nicely together now I might as well correlate the name of the third mysterious chandrian danger ‘the singers‘ to this Aleph meeting just to really stir matters up further. The singers are neither the Amyr nor the Sithe but must have been present here too by default to be recognised as a third important threat by the Chandrian since this is where all the new god given powers were being allocated once and for all. I will suggest that we have already met the final members of group3 when I point out that Tehlu’s army of angels were also given their wings at this very same meeting for a specific task which was considered less extreme than that of the Amyr and Sithe when they were touched by Aleph and had their long names changed by him. ‘They came to Aleph, and he touched them. The touched their hands and eyes and hearts. The last time he touched them there was pain, and wings tore from their backs that they might go where they wished… ...

The Oracle

8 ~ The Oracle If Aleph knows the names of all things, Cthaeh knows the shape of all futures. The Tree of Knowledge I swear it on my tongue and teeth. I swear it on the doors of stone . I’m telling you three thousand times. There is nothing in my world or yours more dangerous than the Cthaeh.  So then… The Cthaeh… Interesting name, and it’s not a small name. It tells to us about itself. ‘Do not try to pin me with small names. I am Cthaeh. I am. I see. I know… At times I speak.’ [Is that the three part meaning of its name right there? Put that aside for later when we investigate puppet.] Whilst we should all agree on that emphatic statement, we do need to ask ourselves the question ‘What exactly does it do?’ Well, it is a seer. It sees the future… all futures apparently, and it can see them all perfectly. Now, Perfectly would imply it is therefore a creature of the shapers, because all things the shapers made were created to be perfect too. The whole of Fae was created to be perfect...

Butterflies

We cannot wrap up the Fae without talking about the butterflies. If the bioluminescent moths are the magical stuff of the Mael, then their butterfly cousins should be redolent of light magic. What might happen if one of Felurians butterflies made it through the door stones into mortal? How about the same question with one of cthaeh's! I cannot conceive how or why the butterflies are important, but observation tells us they clearly are.  Colour is how we divide them and by comparing colours to subjects it appears that there is some method to the madness. Chaos theory.  I think that there is a link between the Cthaehs butterflies and his next words as there seems to be a ceremony taking place during Kvothes encounter with the sacrificial butterfly being chosen by it's colour to answer questions on a specific subject. Each colour pertains to a different field of inquiry. The red one at the start is Kvothe himself and so by dissecting it, Cthaeh can see ten feet through him which ...
