chapter two

Act I Scene 1

The midddle of Newarre

Cob. “It were blue I tell you, Blue!

Graham: Now im not saying it weren't a bit blue at the beginning, but its nor blue now, is it, just normal fire colour like

Cob: It lit up the sky like a beacon it did, then there were another bolt of lightning, only this one went UP, I swear it by the ever moving moon.

And then it were just normal fire, the whole church went up in flames. I saw it all from Shep's porch

where you had been sleeping off the drink, right...

You reckon the priest was caught at home?

Well he's not been seen and I can't imagine where else he would have been at that time o night

He might have been looking in on the widow Creel, even priests get lonely

If there are any bones, it'll be his. (Thought. Two skeletons later found!?)

Hap came over from where he had been dousing the last of the fire.

Iron wheel was just painted wood.?Far too many unexplained things going on around here of late, we cant just ignore them any more. We need to do something

We need to hold a town meeting, and the churh house aint available any more

The Waystone Inn would be best, and I could do with a Cider to get this smoke out of my lungs.

Where is Kote, Id ve thought hed be out here helping some , not surprised Bast isn't,

Lets take that to Old Lant , we need to know what to do next.

Town meeting called. Send word out via kids. Everyone at the inn at midday.

Lets go knock up kote for a drink.

Scene 2

outside the Waystone

The door was locked. Graham banged it with fist fist. “Hoy, Kote! Open up in there”

“Surprised they wasn't out helping with the fire”

“Not Surprised Bast wasn't”

“Hoy, Bast! Are you in there?”

“Try the back door...

locked up tight...right sensible behaviour these days.

“There's a window open up there” piped in Kostrel, pointing to the upper end room.

“That's Basts room” said Mary raising not a few eyebrows

“Hoy Bast! Wake up man, this is an emergency”

the Inn was silent as a grave.

“Its not like Kote to be abed at this hour”

One of them is always about, you never know when a customer might arrive.”

What about that scribe fellah., ...Devan. Is he still here?

“Hoy Devan! Is there anybody in there?”

“Do you think they are alright? Perhaps something else has happened

Perhaps they were in the church with the priest when the fire started”

first to arrive, tried to save the priest and all burnt,

we only found one body

“Nah, Kote and Leodin didn't get on, everyone knows that.” rattled off Old Cob.

“He weren't at the burying last night, nor was he up at Shep's after.”

I saw it all from Shep's porch. Continued Cob, BOOM BOOM BOOM up on lightning tree hill and then across the valley the church just erupted in a piller of Blue fire

It were normal enough fire when I saw it

It were Blue I tell ya, Blue! I know what I saw

Brandy burns blue

Bast was, remember he showed up late on, and Kote sent that bottle of Brand.

arguement

Graham threw some gravel up at the glass but Bast was clearly not at home either.

“Do you think they are alright?”

“We ought to check”

“I could climb up there “ said Kostrel, then I could come down on the inside and let you all in.

Scene 3

Inside the Waystone

Right foot rain barrel left foot window ledge, left hand drainpipe and he swung himself onto the porch roof.

Edging his way along the tar and tin He passed Chroniclers window but curtains? Nothing? Dulater was soon inside Bast's room , the room was empty yet gloriously full of things to interest inquisitive young boys. He stopped and did something* before renewed calls from below snapped him out of it. He emerged at the end of the corridor with rooms along each side. At the other end was the staircase down into the Tap room where he stopped and stared for a long time.

The banging was finally answered by the click of the lock.

“What took you so long?”

Kostrel swung the door openwide and pointed.

Lying on the floor was Kote who lay in a pool of blood as red as his hair.

We can't have a meeting with a corpse in the room, it aint right.

Wind him in these good white sheets ive found and put him in the garden for now.

Later on someone had dug a grave, under the Selas vines. there were blue flowers upon it. The body of Kote the Yllish Barman was dead and buried. Bast did it, still around then?

His face was a tapestry of bruises but it had been the stab through the heart that had killed him. He lay there pale almost peaceful, still as a board and very very dead.

The widow creel started to cry, kostrel put his arm around her

Capter One pt II

Just before dawn, Unseasonal winds of Winter came to Newarre. It bought Ice to littlecreek and Frost to the beanfields. Itr was as though old man winter/ Jackfrost? himself had wandered the town for a piece of an hour before the first rays of the sun melted all his handiwork away. By the time Eli had reached his fields The return of the sun revealed that the cold snap had passsed as mysteriously as it had arrived. frost had mostly melted away in the but the damage was done. There wasn't a beanstalk unblighted. The whole crop was ruined and because everyone with ha;f an pounce of sense had planted beans this year and that half the town was ruined too.

Down on Boggans farm Emberlee had been milking for an hour when the cold struck. Ill dressed for winter she had to hug the cow for warmth until dawn chased the frost away. Afterwards, all the cows had gone dry and the milk had spoiled in the churn.

The Blacksmiths fire had gone out despite it being stoked for the night. It was the worst catastrophe in living memory. Only just reaping and the weather was going full dearth.

The night befores rain, frozen into rime , was stilll melting off the trees and the sun had barely risen into the clear blue sky when the first bolt of lightning struck the tree on the Pixie mound.

Everyone saw it. Everyone agreed afterwards. The facts were incontrivertible. Three stacatto bolts of pure white lightning had struck the old lightning tree on Pixie Hill and yet clear across the frozen creek, the church erupted into flames. Blue flames. The whole town could bear witness to the highest point . It burnt bright and blue for what seemed like a mortal age before three more bolts of lightnign lit up the sky with a bang that threw flaming debris in all directions. and when the blast had settled and everyone looked back, the flame wasjust yellow agin. But blue or yellow, the flame was real and church still burnt to the ground regardless.

To cap an awful year of bad luck Good red sparks blew downwinds and caught in the thatch of the Bensons house and then there were two fires to contend with.

Just when they though tthey'd seen it all Then came the thunder which evolved into the sound of hoofbeats. Out of the southern forest they came, Six white riders on six white horses burst from the brush and ran straight through the centre of town and off up towards stonebridge. The smell of rotten flowers ?

Old cob fell to the floor clutching his chest/
